Blephex is a unique, revolutionary treatment for dry eyes, now available at Hanson Opticians.

Blepharitis is a chronic, inflammatory disease of the eyelids caused by an overgrowth of normal bacteria living along the lid and the base of the eyelashes. Blepharitis can affect people of all ages, but it is more common when people get older, as their tears decrease in the production of natural antibodies to protect against these diseases.
The overgrowth of bacteria causes crusting along the eyelid, and creates a sticky environment that traps dead skin cells and other debris among the eyelashes. Since the eyelashes are difficult to clean, this overgrowth of bacteria, scurf and debris can accumulate over many years. The environment allows even more bacteria to flourish, not only causing a multitude of irritating symptoms, but eventually chronic inflammation. The inflammation, in turn, adversely affects all of the structures in the eyelids, namely, the tear glands.

You may notice some or all of the following:

• Eyelids become crusty, irritated and red due to a build-up of oil and debris on the eyelids and eyelashes.
• Burning, irritation, soreness and itching of the eyelids.
• Foreign body sensation (you feel like there is something in your eye).
• Watery eyes.
• Scales close to the root of the eyelash.

Blepharitis is a chronic (long-term) recurring condition and so the most important part of treating and managing it is to keep your eyelids clean.

Occasionally it is due to an infection, and in this case, you may also have to take medication prescribed by your healthcare professional to be used throughout the prescribed treatment.

Although Blepharitis is not life threatening, if not treated it will not improve, and your symptoms will remain and possibly worsen.

Blepharitis is one of the most common reasons for cancelling elective (planned) eye surgery.

BlephEx™, the newest treatment for blepharitis, is an in-practice procedure performed directly by the eye care practitioner. With BlephEx,™ the clinician thoroughly and precisely eliminates the scurf and bacterial debris and thus can directly clean and exfoliate your eyelids and lashes using the Blephex, a painless and relatively quick treatment, which will almost immediately improve your symptoms and help control the long term damage to your tear glands.
